Turmeric is often called Indian saffron. It is the root of a ginger-like plant with a bright orange interior. It’s boiled, peeled, dried and ground to produce turmeric powder. It’s probably likened to saffron because of its coloring, certainly not for its flavor. Turmeric is what makes curry yellow. It is extensively used in the Middle East, India and Northern Africa in sauces, couscous, chutneys and rice dishes.
